How to Prepare for a Video Interview

How to Prepare for a Video Interview

If you are going to be interviewed on video, chances are you are going to want to bring your A-game.  Understandably, some people get nervous before a recorded interview, but there is no need for that when you come prepared.  Review and practice these tips, and you will surely knock it out of the park.

Before the interview:

  • Get plenty of sleep.  It will show in your face and your voice that you are well rested.
  • Do not overdose on caffeine the day of your interview.  It could make you sound like a total spazz.
  • Keep water close by in order to wet your whistle if necessary.
  • Go to your “happy place”. Listen to your favorite song, call a friend, enjoy a latte (in moderation) before the interview.

Answers:

  • Understand that your interview will be edited.  The editor can choose to only use the good stuff. So don’t worry if you stutter.
  • Don’t rush.  Collect your thoughts and talk at a normal pace.  Most likely if you think you are talking too slowly, it is probably just right.
  • Speak in complete sentences (Try to repeat the question back to the interviewer in your answers) instead of fragmented “yes and no” answers
  • Don’t be afraid to repeat yourself.  Chances are, you will more likely nail it if you try saying it a few different ways.
  • Don’t over-use industry jargon or clichés. Speak to on your audience’s level.  Simplify the complex when possible.

Dress:

  • Dress comfortably.  If you feel stiff, you will act stiff. And stiff folks are not fun to watch or listen to.  So wear something you feel confident and comfortable in.
  • Dress confidently.  This is no time to save your favorite outfit.  If you feel like you look great, it will show.  So go ahead and rock that jacket like you want to.
  • Solid colors work well. Try to avoid crazy patterns.  Patterns in shirts and jackets (checks, herringbone, plaid) tend to cause a strange camera effect that could distract viewers.
  • Wear what you would wear in front of your target audience.  If you would normally wear a suit to work, wear it on the video.
  • Err on the modest side.  Unless you are a fashion designer, you do not want what you wear to steal the show.

Appearance:

  • This is not the time to shine.  Blot your face a bit to keep the oils at bay.  Otherwise, you may send off a glare.
  • Stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of water well before the interview to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy.
  • Guys, you don’t have to get that “fresh haircut” look right before the interview. Just be sure to style it the way you like it.
  • Ladies, this is the time to spend a little extra time on hair and makeup.  You have an excuse now.
  • Sit up and lean forward slightly when you talk to open up your diaphragm, increase your air supply, prevent you from slumping and make you look “into” the discussion.
  • Make and hold a healthy level of eye contact with the interviewer.

Pro Tips:

  • Know what you are talking about.
  • Really know what you are talking about.
  • Listen to a comedy show, audiobook or talk show before you show up.
  • Review basic questions the before the interview.  Be prepared with your answers without sounding like a robot.
  • Be passionate.  Tell stories.  Convince someone of something.

If you follow a few of these tips and treat the interview like a casual conversation with a friend, it will sound authentic.  If you are passionate about it, chances are that it will sound amazing no matter what. Now, Go forth and interview well.
